A room that changed its purpose

A The Easton Learning Centre had a room that was used mainly for storing old furniture. A group of students proposed converting it into a place where unfinished projects could be tested. They wanted an alternative to presenting only polished final work. The centre agreed to a trial, describing the room as a workshop for ideas rather than an exhibition space. The aim was to make it acceptable to show an early design, receive a question and revise it.
B The first events were too open-ended. Students arrived with projects at very different stages, and some waited for someone else to begin. The organisers introduced a simple structure: each visitor had five minutes to explain a problem, followed by ten minutes of questions. Visitors could bring a sketch, a short piece of writing or a small model. They were not required to prepare a formal presentation. This format gave participants a starting point without requiring all projects to look the same.
C Feedback was initially dominated by confident speakers. Their suggestions were sometimes useful, but quieter students had little opportunity to identify what they did not understand. The organisers responded by asking everyone to write one question before the discussion began. A facilitator then invited different participants to read their questions. The change did not eliminate disagreement; it made the range of concerns more visible and gave less confident participants a defined contribution.
D The organisers originally counted how many projects reached a finished state after a workshop. They later realised that abandoning an unsuitable design could also be a productive outcome. Their follow-up form now asks what decision a participant made and what evidence influenced it. A student who changes the problem being investigated may have gained more than a student who finishes an attractive model without questioning its purpose. Completion is recorded, but it is no longer the only indicator considered.
E The room has limited space and cannot safely accommodate large structures. Before attending, visitors submit a short description and the dimensions of anything they intend to bring. A coordinator checks these details and may suggest photographs instead of the physical object. The workshop is not a repair service, and staff do not undertake specialist work on visitors’ equipment. These boundaries help keep the activity focused on discussing and testing ideas.
