A At Northfield College, a service called the equipment library lends cameras, microphones and small recording kits to students. It was created after tutors noticed that some students could plan a media project but could not afford the equipment needed to complete it. The service began with equipment already owned by the college; no new cameras were purchased for the launch. Students do not pay a borrowing fee, although they must register using their college identification.

B At first, bookings were accepted only at the library desk. Staff later introduced an online system so that students could check availability before travelling to campus. A booking reserves an item for collection; it does not extend the loan period. Most equipment may be kept for three days. Recording kits containing several connected components have a shorter limit of two days because staff need additional time to check them between users. Late returns prevent other students from starting their projects on the planned date.

C Borrowers must attend a short introduction before taking a recording kit for the first time. This session covers connecting the components and packing them correctly. It does not teach video editing, which is offered separately by the media department. Students who have completed the introduction do not need to repeat it for later loans. Staff noticed fewer missing cables after the sessions began, but they have not established whether the sessions were the only reason for that change.

D During the first term, the college recorded 240 loans made by 90 different students. Some students borrowed more than once, so the loan count should not be treated as the number of users. In a voluntary questionnaire, respondents often mentioned reduced project costs. The college did not compare their project marks with those of students who did not borrow equipment, and it made no claim that the service had improved academic performance.

E The next proposed addition is a portable lighting set. Tutors have requested one, but a storage space has not yet been approved, so it is not currently available. Staff intend to collect further feedback before deciding how much equipment to add. They have not announced a date for the expansion or published the price of the proposed lighting set.
