What does participation tell us?

A An online learning platform can record whether a student opens a page, watches a video or submits an answer. These records are useful for understanding how a service is used, but they do not all represent the same kind of learning. A page view tells us that a page was opened. It does not, by itself, tell us whether the learner understood the explanation or could use it in a new situation. Treating every recorded action as equivalent obscures this distinction.
B This does not mean that activity records should be discarded. A student who repeatedly leaves an exercise unfinished may need help with the task, the language or access to a suitable device. The record identifies a pattern worth investigating, not the reason behind it. An instructor who assumes that unfinished work proves a lack of effort may respond to the wrong problem. A short conversation or a smaller diagnostic task can provide the missing context.
C Measures closer to performance can answer different questions. Asking a learner to solve an unfamiliar problem without assistance gives evidence of what they can currently do independently. Asking them to explain a step can reveal whether a correct answer came from reasoning or a lucky guess. Neither measure is perfect: a difficult question may sample a narrow part of the course, and an explanation may itself require language the learner is still developing. Several pieces of evidence are therefore more informative than a single dramatic result.
D The timing of a check matters as well. A successful answer immediately after a demonstration may reflect short-term access to the example. A later task with changed details asks whether the method is still available when the original wording is no longer in front of the learner. Repeating the exact same question can be useful practice, but it answers a different question from a new independent attempt. Reports should distinguish these conditions instead of presenting all correct answers as equally strong evidence.
E A useful progress report can remain simple. It can record the task, whether help was given, the delay since instruction and the particular errors that remain. Activity counts may sit beside this information, but should not replace it. The aim is not to collect the largest possible quantity of data. It is to collect enough relevant evidence to decide what the student should practise next.
